This session outlines the side-effects and complications of intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) use. It discusses both immediate side-effects on insertion and problems that arise with long-term use. It also outlines the management plan when a complication arises.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • 5.3.1 Describe management options for a woman with side-effects or complications after IUD/IUS fitting

The intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) are increasingly popular methods of contraception. Along with the contraceptive injection and subdermal implant they are termed long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods.
