This session aims to outline the management of type 2 diabetes in children and young people.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Outline the management goals of type 2 diabetes
  • Explain the use of metformin in children and young people with type 2 diabetes
  • Describe the other drugs used in type 2 diabetes management
  • Explain the differences in management for type 1 and type 2 diabetes

This session outlines the management of type 2 diabetes in children and young people (CYP).

Jan Idkowiak,
Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Endocrinology

Jan is National GRID Trainee in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and NIHR Academic Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

He has been awarded with a PhD on his thesis on the molecular regulation of androgen biosynthesis in 2015.

He is interested in androgen excess and deficiency conditions, obesity and early markers of metabolic disease progression.

Consultant Paediatrician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

Dr Chizo Agwu. MBBS, MRCP, PCME, MSc, FRCPCH is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer/Deputy Admissions Tutor at University of Birmingham and RCPCH Principal Regional Examiner for West Midlands.
