This session gives a brief overview of some, but by no means all, mental health conditions that practice nurses might meet in primary care. It is hoped that you will then have a better understanding of how these patients are affected in their day to day life.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe some of the mental health conditions likely to be seen in primary care and their effect on patients' lives
  • Explain how you can help a patient with a mental health condition
  • Recognise when and where you should refer or signpost a patient to further help or advice

Ninety per cent of people with mental illness are dealt with in primary care.
