This session begins by considering the mechanisms of acute pain and how this can be managed pharmacologically. The differences between nociceptive and neuropathic pain are then covered. Finally the three main treatments for nociceptive pain are discussed.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Outline the mechanisms of acute pain
  • Describe the pharmacological management of acute pain
  • Differentiate between the nature and management of nociceptive and neuropathic pain
  • State the mechanisms of action and dosages for paracetamol, NSAIDs and opioids and issues associated with their use

Jane Quinlan,
Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Oxford University Hospitals Trust

Since qualifying from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1990, Jane trained in anaesthesia in London at St Thomas’ and Bart’s hospitals, and in Oxford.

She is now a consultant anaesthetist in Oxford, and an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Oxford.

Jane’s professional interests include acute and inpatient pain management.

Jane is a content author and module editor for the e-PAIN project.
