Essentials of the foot at risk
This session will introduce you to the foot, how to do a foot check and maintain foot hygiene and what to do if you identify any problems or changes. It will help you to build the skills needed to reduce the risk of a person developing foot problems.

For the purpose of this session, the foot is from below the ankle. The focus is on preventing wounds on the foot and does not cover how to manage existing foot ulceration.

This session will be of benefit to health and care workers, practitioners or carers across any care setting.

Learning outcomes
The learning outcomes and content of the session have been developed for Level 4 study.

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

  • recognise the anatomy and basic function of the foot
  • complete a basic foot assessment
  • identify some of the problems which might be seen in the foot at risk
  • explain the need for good foot care and hygiene
  • recognise when to make an appropriate referral
  • record and report findings from a patient review
