Essentials of leg ulceration
This session discusses the care of a person with leg ulceration.

This session will be of benefit to health and care workers across any care setting who may come across people with leg ulcers as part of their job role.

For the purpose of this session, the leg is from the ankle bone to below the knee.

Learning outcomes
The learning outcomes and content of the session have been developed for Level 4 study. 

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

  • describe the main causes of leg ulceration
  • recognise how leg ulcers are assessed
  • understand the need for compression therapy when appropriate
  • recognise the significance of changes in lower limb symptoms
  • record and report findings from the patient review
  • value the importance of good communication and interpersonal skills with the multidisciplinary team

Introduction to leg ulcers
Leg ulcers affect many people in the UK. 

They are the most common type of wound, accounting for around 34% of all wounds [1].
