What is the Menopause course for GPs
This session explains the demographics, physiology, and consequences of the menopause and provides an insight into counselling women about the timing and effects of the menopause.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the demographics, physiology and consequences of the menopause
- Diagnose perimenopause and menopause, and know which investigations are required
- Explain what factors contribute to the effects of the menopause
- Counsel women about the changes occurring at the perimenopause and the menopause
- Appreciate the importance of premature or early menopause
The menopause is the final menstrual period and is only known retrospectively one year after the event. It is the permanent cessation of the menstrual cycle due to loss of ovarian follicular activity.
Dr Heather Currie MB BS, FRCOG, MRCGP, MFFP is an Associate Specialist gynaecologist and obstetrician at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where she specialises in Menopause, Pre Menstrual syndrome and Sub-fertility. She is a member of the British Menopause Society council, Scottish Clinical Director for the National Association for Premenstrual Syndrome, Associate Editor for the Journal of family planning and Reproductive Healthcare, on the editorial Board for Mims Women’s Health, National Lead for SAS doctors in O & G and Managing Director of Menopause Matters Ltd which runs the award winning website www.menopausematters.co.uk and publishes the quarterly Menopause Matters magazine. She is the author of the award winning book, Menopause, answers at your fingertips.
