This session outlines the basic skills required to deliver effective diagnoses. It will form an introduction to the further learning delivered within this programme that will complement these skills.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain the need to record diagnoses for all patients
  • devise a schematic sequence to arrive at a diagnosis
  • describe where to obtain the knowledge to allow differential diagnosis skills to be refined

This session will define and introduce the skills required by a clinician to assess the potential diagnoses of any patient with one or more presenting conditions.

Mike Mulcahy,

Mike Mulcahy qualified at Leeds in 1973. He is immediate past Dean of the FGDP(UK).

He lectures throughout the UK on various subjects including communication skills and is the author of the communication section of Pathways in Practice.

At present, he is Course Director of the MSc in Primary Dental Care at the University of Kent, and Course Director of the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry and the Aesthetic Masterclasses at the FGDP (UK). He also practices part time in his own general dental practice.

Mike is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is co-Module Editor for Module 1 Patient Assessment, and Module 12 Management and Leadership.
