Viral Exanthems course for GPs
A case-based approach to the recognition and management of the common viral exanthems of childhood.
This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in October 2021.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- explain the common viral exanthems of childhood and distinguish the clinical features
- identify features that distinguish viral exanthems from other potentially devastating causes of rashes
- formulate relevant management plans and advise parents appropriately
- report notifiable diseases
- outline a strategy for managing a pregnant woman who has, or who has been in contact with, a viral exanthem
This session takes a case-based approach to looking at viral exanthems.
You will be presented with a series of hypothetical cases and asked to consider the best way forward in each instance. All of these cases are based on everyday situations, but have been fictionalised.
Tauseef Mehrali undertook his pre-clinical studies at Churchill College, University of Cambridge and completed his clinical training at the University of Birmingham, his hometown.
He remained in the West Midlands region to specialise in paediatrics, gaining membership to the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health in 2007.
His Damascene moment came in 2007 to retrain in general practice and move to London. He worked at the Royal Free Hospital for a year and a further year as a GP registrar in Camden. During this time he became a regular guest blogger for the British Medical Journal charting his experiences as a trainee in inner-city London. He now contributes to the BMJ Group’s newly launched doc2doc Forums.
His particular interests lie in paediatrics, medical education and technology as applied to medicine. He is a keen traveller, travel writer and amateur barista with an ever-expanding portfolio of latte art. He is the author of the viral exanthems and neonatal jaundice sessions.
