This session provides an overview of the assessment and management of children with urinary tract infection (UTI).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recall the epidemiology of UTI in children
  • List the aetiology and risk factors of UTI in children
  • Apply a patient-centred approach to UTI in children presenting to primary care
  • Assess a child with suspected UTI including urinalysis
  • Consider age and illness severity in relation to management, referral and imaging

This session covers the aetiology, investigation and management of UTI in children. It aims to provide a logical approach to the diagnosis and effective management of childhood UTI in the primary care setting. It is based on the recommendations in the NICE Guideline for UTI in children.
