This session looks at which topical anaesthetics are available, including techniques for their application, uses, disadvantages and alternatives.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the main uses of topical anaesthesia in dentistry
  • list the main anaesthetic agents used for topical anaesthesia
  • describe the technique for achieving topical anaesthesia
  • explain the limitations and alternatives

Topical anaesthetics have various uses and applications in dentistry.

The aim of using a topical anaesthetic is to reduce the discomfort associated with procedures such as intra-oral injections, extra-oral venepuncture or intravenous cannulation.

Before commencing this session you should have:

  • completed the eDen session in Module 3 Anxiety and pain control in dentistry/Dental local anaesthesia/Introduction to local anaesthesia (141-0119)

Zoe is currently a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Paediatric Dentistry at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. She recently finished a six month post at University Hospital Aintree as an SHO in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Zoe completed two years General Professional Training in the Northern Deanery. She worked as a House Officer at Newcastle Dental Hospital, in all the departments, and in a General Dental Practice. She qualified from Newcastle Dental School with BDS in June 2008, and passed the MFDS Parts I and II from RCS Edinburgh in 2009-2010.
