Timing of Interceptive Treatments course for Dental Practice
In this session, you will identify anterior and posterior crossbites and discover the benefits and possible harm of interceptive treatments. You will also find out when and how to use removable, fixed and functional appliances in the treatment of crossbites.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the benefits and possible harm of interceptive treatments
- Identify when and how to use appliances to correct crossbites
- List the differences between removable and fixed appliances to correct crossbites
Comprehensive orthodontic treatment during the deciduous or mixed dentition rarely has any long-term benefit and could potentially harm the patient if prolonged. It can use up valuable resources as well as patient cooperation without significant benefits.
Before commencing this session you should have completed the following e-Den sessions in module 7 Management of Developing Dentition/Assessment for Interceptive Treatment:
- The Development of the Normal Occlusion, Primary, Mixed and Permanent (141-0282)
- Non-orthodontic Interceptive Procedures to Reduce the Severity of Malocclusion (141-0285)
Jonathan has been a Consultant Orthodontist at Chesterfield Royal Hospital since 1993. He is a MOrth Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an ISFE Examiner. He is also a member of the Angle Society of Europe, and one of only two British orthodontists with European Board Certification.
Jonathan is the author of over 85 peer-reviewed publications, a clinical editor for the Journal of Orthodontics, and a contributing editor to the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. He was chairman of the British Orthodontic Conference from 2004 to 2006 and will be chairman of the World Orthodontic Conference to be held in London in 2015.
Alison is a Consultant Orthodontist at the Royal Derbyshire Hospital. She is M.Orth Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an ISFE examiner. She is the author of over 25 peer-reviewed publications.
Alison is treasurer of the Consultant Orthodontic Group and Treasurer/ Executive member of the British Orthodontic Society.
