Caring for older people is complicated by the challenges of multiple conditions, poor communication and atypical presentations. This session highlights these difficulties and aims to provide practical solutions to use in the GP surgery. This session was reviewed by Jenny Bedford and last updated in November 2014.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges associated with caring for older people; managing multiple conditions, poor communication and atypical presentations
  • Explain the importance of holistic, patient-centred and problem-oriented care for older people
  • Summarise why a multidisciplinary approach to the care of older people is essential
  • Describe the issues around continuity of care and its importance in the care of older people

An ageing population will bring increased demands on primary care; it is important that as a GP you have strategies in place for effective care of this important sector of the population.
