The Role of the Bacterial Biofilm course for Dental Practice
This session looks at the nature of bacterial biofilms such as dental plaque, how biofilms are formed, and what can be done to maintain them at healthy levels. It also considers the consequences of formation in terms of the microbial interactions that take place.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the nature and properties of biofilms and microbial communities
- Explain the significance of dental plaque as both a biofilm and a microbial community
- Outline the key stages in the biological development of dental plaque
- Explain the microbial interactions that occur in plaque biofilms
- Identify the main methods used to manage dental plaque
The session also outlines the variations in the composition of plaque on different tooth surfaces. However, a full description of the microbial diversity of these oral biofilms is beyond the scope of this session.
Before commencing this session you should:
- Understand the basic concepts of microbiology
- Know the fundamentals of oral microbiology
A graduate in Genetics & Microbiology (University of Sheffield, 1970), Professor Marsh completed his PhD at the University of London in 1975. Since then, he has worked in several leading institutes studying the role of the oral microflora in health and disease, the effect of antimicrobial agents on the oral microflora, public health and treatment issues associated with dental unit water systems, the influence of ageing on the oral microflora, and determination of the potential for transmission of variant CJD through dentistry.
He was joint winner of the William Gies Award for the best paper in the Journal of Dental Research (1991) and was awarded the ORCA-Rolex Award for Caries Research (1991), the IADR Distinguished Science Award for Research in Dental Caries (1998) and the Society for General Microbiology Colworth Prize Lecture Award (2001). He received a Lifetime Achievement award from the World Congress on Minimally Invasive Dentistry in 2008.
