This session will discuss the correlation between calculus and gingivitis.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the origins and composition of calculus
  • Identify the effects of calculus on periodontal health
  • Define the relationship between calculus and gingivitis

Dental calculus is hardened dental plaque found in the majority of adults, either supra or sub-gingivally. In populations with good oral hygiene, minimal supragingival calculus is commonly found on tooth surfaces adjacent to the salivary ducts. Subgingival calculus formation in these patients appears to have little effect on attachment loss.
