This session describes the oral presentations of HIV/AIDS and their relevance to the dental practitioner.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and pathogenesis of HIV and AIDS
  • List the progress stages and classifications of HIV and AIDS
  • List and describe the oral manifestations of HIV and AIDS
  • Discuss the relevance to dental practice

This session aims to provide an overview of HIV and AIDS and outline the key points with regard to epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical presentation.

The relevance to dental practice will also be discussed. This includes issues in relation to cross infection and oral manifestations.

After qualifying as a dentist in 2005, Dr Martyn Ormond BDS (Glas) MFDS RCS (Edin) MBBS (UoL), completed a period of General Professional Training incorporating rotations in general dental practice as well as the community and hospital dental services. Following this, he completed an undergraduate medical degree at Barts and The London Medical School.

After two years Foundation Training he took up his current post as a Specialty Doctor in Oral Medicine at Guy’s Dental Hospital.
