The Management of Periodontitis course for Dental Practice



This session will describe the diagnosis and management of periodontitis, how to distinguish it from gingivitis and when to refer the patient for specialist help.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the signs and symptoms of periodontitis
- Record the important clinical parameters
- Develop and execute an initial treatment plan (ITP)
- Re-evaluate the condition to assess changes arising from the ITP
It will also take an overview of the role of periodontal surgery in the management of periodontitis and consider what to do when periodontal therapy fails to produce a maintainable outcome.


Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- The characteristics of healthy gingival tissue
- Basic principles of dental charting and the meaning of BPE (basic periodontal examination) scores
- Interpretation of dental radiographs
- Principles of root surface instrumentation and plaque control options
Philip Greene has over 35 years experience in general and specialist practice in Periodontics, and runs a private practice in Manchester devoted to Periodontics. He is a Dental Expert Witness, author of many journal articles and presentations, and is a contributor to the Textbook of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, (Ed: Ireland, R) published by Blackwell Munksgaard. He is a member of British Society of Periodontology Education Committee and a founder member of the Expert Witness Institute.
