The Limping Child course for GPs
This session considers the assessment, examination and treatment of limps in children. Red flag symptoms are described along with an overview of the consequences of a late diagnosis of conditions such as septic arthritis, Perthe’s disease, slipped capital femoral ephiphysis and inflammatory arthritis.
This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in September 2019.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify salient features in the history and examination of a limping child
- Recognise red flag symptoms and signs in a limping child
- Describe the consequences of late diagnosis of limp due to septic arthritis, Perthe’s disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis and inflammatory arthritis
Management of children without any sinister features requires a clear explanation, reassurance, symptom relief and a plan for review if symptoms fail to resolve.
