This session describes the dental assessment and examination of children and adolescents. It will cover all aspects of the assessment process and appropriate age-related behaviour management techniques.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • identify suitable age-related patient management
  • describe how to undertake a thorough patient history
  • identify the features of an age appropriate examination
  • describe the roles of consent when examining the child patient
  • describe how to reach an accurate diagnosis
  • describe how to construct an age appropriate treatment plan

The aim of paediatric dentistry is to improve and maintain the oral health of children and adolescents.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should:

  • be aware of developmental milestones (including dental)
  • have knowledge of behaviour management techniques
  • have experience in examining child dental patients
  • be familiar with the principles of treatment planning

You should also have completed the following e-Den sessions in Module 1 Patient assessment/Assessment methods and techniques:

  • Performing an extra-oral and facial examination
  • Assessing the intra-oral soft tissues
  • A general prthodontic examination of the patient
  • Assessment for orthodontic referral
  • Assessment of disease levels and factors that will impact on caries status
  • Selection criteria for radiographic examination
  • Special tests and baseline records

Gillian Richardson is a dentist specialising in paediatric dentistry, and is based in Edinburgh.

Sanjeev Sood,
Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher and Undergraduate Lead in Paediatric Dentistry

On graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2000 with his BDS, Sanjeev undertook General Professional Training in Glasgow where he worked in general practice for one year and then as a JHO at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. He then remained in Glasgow for a further year during which he successfully completed his MFDS exam from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Sanjeev started his specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry in 2003 in Dublin, where he also carried out his Master’s thesis on bonding to teeth affected by Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation. Following completion of his master’s degree and specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry he worked as a lecturer for the University of Dublin based in the Dublin Dental School and Hospital and was involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

He moved to Edinburgh in 2008 where he started his higher specialist training to become a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute and successfully passed his ISFE examination and was awarded with a FDS from the Royal College of Surgeons England.

He was appointed as Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher, Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute in July 2011.

Kathryn Harley,
Chairman of the Postgraduate Education Committee of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of England

Kathryn Harley graduated from Guy’s Hospital Dental School, University of London in 1981. She completed her Masters degree in Conservative Dentistry at the Eastman in 1986 where she was appointed Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry in 1991. In September 1999 she took up the post of Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute where she is Head of Department. Kathryn is currently Chairman of the Postgraduate Education Committee of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In June 2010 she will complete 10 years as a member of the Board of Dental Protection Limited, having been Chairman for the last four.
