This session provides an introduction to leadership and management and how this links to everyday dental practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the background to theories of management and leadership
  • Define the terms management and leadership
  • Distinguish between management and leadership
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the relationship between management and leadership
  • Identify areas for your own development

Classical theories of management are usually acknowledged to begin with the writings of Frederick Taylor, an American industrialist. The term 'Taylorism' emanates from studies which focused on analysing working practices in order to eliminate 'waste' within the working process, and to find an ever illusive 'best model' for working.
