This session will look at the surgical protocol, flap design and hard tissue management for dental implants.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain the protocols for dental implant surgery
  • describe and apply various surgical flap designs for implant surgery
  • describe the postoperative care required for dental implant surgery

This session will describe the placement of dental implants and the knowledge required for a successful outcome.

  • Module 9 Replacement of teeth/Implantology/Basic principles of implantology (141-0441)
  • Module 5 Hard and soft tissue surgery/Surgical dentistry/Principles of minor oral surgery (141-0199)
  • Module 4 Periodonal disease and management/Surgical periodontal therapy/Periodontal flap surgery (141-0193)

Gary is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Barts and the London NHS Trust. He is also a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry Cleft Lip and Palate Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Hon. Senior Clinical Lecturer, Queen Mary University of London and Training Programme Director Restorative Dentistry, Barts and the London.

After a house job at the London, Gary spent time in general practice before returning to hospital dentistry via the Eastman, London Central Middlesex and back to the London. He is a specialist in restorative prosthodontic and restorative dentistry and has taught undergraduate postgraduate and specialist registrars.

Ken Hemmings BDS MSc DRDRCS MRDRCS FDSRCS ILTM FHEA,
Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

Ken graduated with honours from Bristol University in 1982. He gained his London fellowship in 1986 before specialising in restorative dentistry.

He completed a Masters and Senior Registrar training at the Eastman Dental Hospital and became consultant in conservative dentistry and periodontology in 1995. He is recognised by the GDC as a specialist in restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, periodontology and endodontics.

He now shares his time between hospital and private practice.
