Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the anatomy and radiographic landmarks of the knee joint
- Recognise clinical and radiographic features of knee osteoarthritis
- Explain the treatment modalities for knee osteoarthritis
- Describe a common surgical approach to the knee
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:
- A basic knowledge of normal cartilage and anatomy of the knee
- Completed the preceding session: T&O: Osteoarthritis Hip (100-2030) which includes a section of the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most common orthopaedic presentations and accounts for a significant healthcare expenditure, with almost 100 000 knee replacements performed in the UK in 2015 [1](read details regarding the reference).
An understanding of how OA occurs, along with how it can be diagnosed and treated, is important in the management of these patients.
