Surgery | Common Surgical Conditions | Neurology and Neurosurgery: Headache
Neurology and Neurosurgery Headache
Session Overview
Description
This session will review the neurosurgical causes of headache, in particular bleeding in the brain and space-occupying lesions.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Apply the principles of the Monroe-Kelly doctrine with respect to headache
- List the characteristics of common space-occupying lesions
- Distinguish between subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracerebral haemorrhage, and explain the relevant pathophysiology, investigations and complications
- List common neurosurgical causes of headache
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:
- An understanding of neuroanatomy and physiology
This session will focus on the neurosurgical causes of headache and raised intracranial pressure (ICP).
We aim to highlight useful ways to distinguish between surgical causes of headache and give a basic introduction to management of the relevant common conditions.
Other causes of headache such as migraine, cluster headache, and facial pain are covered in other sessions.
