Genitourinary Disease: Renal Failure
Session Overview
Description
This session will give you an overview of renal failure, including how to categorise renal failure, urological causes and how to investigate and manage these.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the different causes of renal failure
- Describe the various urological causes of renal failure
- Explain how to investigate and manage urological causes of renal failure
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:
- Basic knowledge of renal physiology
Acute kidney injury (AKI), otherwise known as acute renal failure, is extremely common with an estimated 1 in 5 patients who are acutely admitted into hospital sustaining an AKI.
A report produced by the UK National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) [1](read details regarding the reference) revealed suboptimal care in managing patients with AKI, in particular with regards to prevention, recognition and specialty intervention.
Approximately 10% of acute renal injury patients have a post-renal cause, many of which are managed by urologists. Recognising these patients and offering early intervention is essential in preventing further morbidity and mortality.
