Supportive Periodontal Therapy course for Dental Practice
This session describes what is meant by supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) and how this phase of treatment fits in the overall management of patients with periodontal diseases. The practical considerations given to the key aspects of SPT and the importance of SPT in maintaining periodontal health in practice will also be covered.

- Describe the role of supportive periodontal therapy in managing patients with periodontal diseases
- Outline key aspects of supportive periodontal therapy in practice
Supportive periodontal therapy is directed at supporting the patient in maintaining their periodontal health and preventing recurrence of the disease. While the dentist, hygienist or therapist is responsible for the provision of the professional periodontal treatments necessary to achieve maximum periodontal health, the patient must be very proactive if they are to successfully maintain their periodontal health.

Val is Professor of Periodontology at Leeds Dental Institute. She was President of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) 2006-2007 and on the BSP Council for nine years (1999-2008), including five years as Honorary Editor (1999-2004). Positions held include Chair of the British Society of Dental Research Periodontal Research Group (2001-2004), Clinical Editor of the British Dental Journal and Associate Editor of the Journal of Dentistry. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dentistry and reviews for many different journals and research funding bodies and has been external examiner at several Institutions in the UK and abroad.
Val’s research interests include: the epidemiology and microbiology of periodontitis in adolescents; clinical and radiographic measurement of periodontal diseases; the relationship between diabetes and periodontal diseases and primary dental care research.
On behalf of BSP, Val has worked with Susan Kindelan (British Society of Paediatric Dentistry) on a joint initiative to produce national guidelines for periodontal screening in the under 18s, and these are now on the respective websites of both organisations (March, 2012).
