The practical considerations given to the key aspects of SPT and the importance of SPT in maintaining periodontal health in practice will also be covered.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by supportive periodontal therapy
  • Describe the role of supportive periodontal therapy in managing patients with periodontal diseases
  • Outline key aspects of supportive periodontal therapy in practice

Supportive periodontal therapy is directed at supporting the patient in maintaining their periodontal health and preventing recurrence of the disease. While the dentist, hygienist or therapist is responsible for the provision of the professional periodontal treatments necessary to achieve maximum periodontal health, the patient must be very proactive if they are to successfully maintain their periodontal health.
