Supporting and Working with the Carers of People with Learning Disabilities course for GPs



The session aims to increase your awareness of the social situation and circumstances of learning disabled adults.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Appreciate the social disadvantages associated with a person with learning disabilities being within a family home
- Comprehend the transitions which the parents of a person with learning disabilities go through
- Interpret the different opportunities for long term care of people with learning disabilities
- Judge how parents, family and carers can best be involved in the care of people with learning disabilities
- Support parents, family and carers when they offer care to people with learning disabilities
In this session, we will discuss how to support the carers of adults with learning disabilities and why it is now essential for primary care teams to have insight into their special circumstances.
Dr. Peter Lindsay FRCP FRCGP is a full time GP at Thakur Practice in North Leeds and a part time clinical assistant in paediatrics. He has an interest in learning disability which goes back to an undergraduate attachment to a hospital for the learning disabled. He is a member of the RCGP special interest group, the RCGP curriculum guardian for LD and has contributed to many recent investigations and reports on the welfare of adults with learning disabilities. He has written on the practical care of adults with LD in primary care and has undertaken regular annual health checks at the Thakur Practice for some years. He has been a VTS Course Organiser, a PCB clinical lead and a trainer.
