Suicide and Self-harm course for Medical Doctors
This session describes and discusses suicide and self-harm. It considers the motives around the behaviours. It identifies the psychological and demographic factors that are likely to be influential. It also explores management approaches and how to respond to individuals who have self-harmed or attempted suicide.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe some of the motives and reasons why a person may choose to self-injure or self-poison
- Identify the key demographic and psychological factors that increase the risk of suicide, which should be explored within a psychosocial assessment
- State a number of general principles that will improve the management of mental health patients within the emergency care setting
- Explain what action may be needed if a patient wishes to leave the emergency care setting before medical treatment or before a psychosocial assessment has been undertaken
Paul is a Clinical Practice Lead with the Exeter Liaison Psychiatry Team. He qualified as an RMN in 1990. He has worked in the Acute in patient setting and as Community Psychiatric Nurse. He joined Liaison Psychiatry in Exeter in 2004. He completed a BSc in Health Studies in 2009 and graduated from Plymouth University. He has an interest in Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy, Training and Education.
Professor House is professor of liaison psychiatry at the University of Leeds. He worked as a consultant at Leeds General Infirmary from 1989 to 2005 and now researchers and teaches full time in the School of Medicine. His current research includes a national evaluation of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of liaison psychiatry services, and developing and evaluating interventions for self-harm in adults.
