This session explores the current methods of female and male sterilisation available in the UK. It looks at the benefits and risks, in particular, focusing on important topics to be included in counselling a person interested in the method. It is useful to have completed the Basic Anatomy and Physiology (403-0101) session prior to commencing this one.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session, learners will be able to:

  • 3.8.1 List the advantages and disadvantages of sterilisation
  • 3.8.2 List methods used for male and female sterilisation 
  • 3.8.3 Facilitate referral for a person considering sterilisation

Sterilisation is a popular and effective contraceptive method for people seeking to avoid pregnancy long-term.
