Ethics, accountability and decision-making
By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • recognise some of the main factors that shape professional decision-making
  • utilise the 'think aloud' technique for exploring decision-making in health and care contexts

Document your answers to the following task in the worksheet. The exercise should take about 10 minutes to complete.

5a task: 'think aloud' exercise

Now you have learned about think aloud, we invite you to take part in your own think aloud exercise in response to decision-making scenarios of the kind that you are likely to encounter in your role as an AHP.

Part i: initial encounter.

Choose 2 or more of the 4 decision-making scenarios that below. Imagine that you are encountering the scenario in your professional role, what are your responses to the following?

  • What is the first thing that you would be thinking about in this situation?
  • What would you be thinking about next?
  • What factors would you be considering?
  • What information would want to find out in order to make a decision? How would find that information out?
