About this session
This training aims to provide you with an understanding of Prevent. Prevent forms part of the wider Government Counter Terrorism strategy known as CONTEST. Prevent aims to stop vulnerable people from becoming radicalised to supporting terrorism or becoming terrorists themselves. It works to tackle the causes of radicalisation and respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and enable those who have engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate.

In the health sector, the Prevent Duty sits alongside long-established duties on all NHS organisations and healthcare professionals to safeguard vulnerable children, young people and adults from harm or exploitation.

There should be no conflation of mental health and terrorism, however, mental health factors may contribute to the risk of making an individual susceptible to adverse influences and exploitation, alongside other complex needs. Timely access to mental health treatment might reduce the overall risk. This is part of the everyday work of mental healthcare professionals, and part of their professional and statutory duties.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the objectives of the Prevent Duty and the mental health sector contribution to the Prevent agenda.
  • Explain the role of mental health practitioners in Prevent.
  • Know your personal and professional responsibilities in relation to safeguarding of adults, children and young people at risk.
  • Know and identify vulnerability factors that may make individuals susceptible to radicalisation or a risk to others and how extremist ideas may seem appealing to vulnerable individuals.
  • Be aware how people with mental health conditions or complex needs interact with someone being vulnerable to radicalisation.
  • Know how to share concerns, seek advice and make referrals within their own organisation and with other agencies where appropriate.
  • Explain how to approach information sharing and understand Channel multi-agency arrangements to provide support and redirection to individuals at risk of radicalisation.
