This session discusses the needs of young people seeking sexual and reproductive healthcare, including the legal aspects of sexual activity, assessing ability to consent, confidentiality and undertaking sexual health consultations.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • 10.1.1 State the legal age of consent for sexual activity
  • 10.1.2 State the components of Fraser Guidance and ability to consent to medical treatment
  • 10.1.3 Describe principles of confidentiality in relation to treating young people
  • 10.1.4 Describe possible barriers to accessing services for young people
  • 10.1.5 Conduct an effective consultation with a young person in relation to contraception and sexual health

Within the UK, young people are disproportionately affected by poor sexual health. Those aged 15-25 years old are at highest risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Under-18 conceptions have decreased by 57% between 2007 to 2017.

Andrew Motherwell,
Nurse Practitioner (Sexual & Reproductive Health)

Andrew graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2009 with a Bachelor of Nursing. He began his career in sexual health in 2011 at Mortimer Market Centre. Throughout his career he has developed skills in contraception and genitourinary medicine, including the FSRH Diploma (DFSRH) and LOCs in for Subdermal Implants and IUC insertion. Andrew completed his Advanced Practice MSc in 2019.

Andrew currently works as a Nurse Practitioner in sexual health services within the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Foundation Trust.
