This session describes various aspects of natural tooth proportions that need to be understood when applying an aesthetic approach in the provision of direct and indirect restorations. The task of shade assessment in the provision of indirect restorations will also be covered.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the basic features of aesthetic assessment
  • Identify the basic features of natural tooth shape and form
  • Relate these features to natural tooth proportions
  • Describe various other parameters related to adjusting the shape, shade and form of teeth in attempting to optimise the aesthetic result

Regardless of the condition, colour and alignment of the teeth, healthy pink gingival tissues are considered paramount. The management of gingival tissues is therefore considered fundamental to successful aesthetic practice.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should:

  • Have a basic knowledge of natural tooth structure, changes of the structures with ageing
  • Understand basic descriptions of tooth dimensions
  • Know the terminology of dental hard and soft tissues

Amin Aminian,
Dentist

Amin Aminian is a specialist in prosthodontics. He is currently in specialist referral practice in Wilmslow, and is an honorary teaching fellow at the University of Manchester Dental School. He qualified from Liverpool in 1993 and received a Masters in prosthodontics from the University of Manchester in 2000. He completed his specialist training in 2004.

His research interests include quality of life issues in the edentulous patient, tooth whitening and aesthetic dentistry.
