This session gives an overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features and management of sleep disorders in adolescence.

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify normal sleep and the normal changes in adolescence
  • Recognise the possibility of a sleep disorder in an adolescent
  • Treat common sleep disorders
  • Advise when to refer onwards for specialist advice

 

Adolescence is a time of significant physical and psychological development, and this is reflected in adolescent sleep. There are significant individual and cultural variations in quantity of sleep, however a majority of adolescents probably get less sleep than their own individual needs.

Kathy Phipps BM DRCOG MRCGP (Late),
GP Principal and Trainer

Kathy was a GP in Barnsley with interests in both adolescent health and medical education. She was a GP trainer and Assistant Medical Director for CPD for Barnsley PCT. Her interest in adolescent health was sparked by being invited to join the PCT’s teenage pregnancy group, and she was subsequently project lead for BITE (Barnsley Interactive Teenage Education), an interactive package aimed at giving choices to young people with regard to contraception and sexual health.

She was an active member of the RCGP Adolescent Task Group from 2002. Kathy passed away tragically in March 2008 and is survived by three teenage children.

Emma Park,
GP Principal

Dr Park is a GP principal in Sheffield and in training to become a GP trainer. Her past experience includes posts in Family planning (specialist youth clinic), Genito-urinary medicine, Eating disorders, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She is a member of the RCGP Adolescent task group and the Sheffield sexual health network. Her interest in Adolescent healthcare was sparked by a medical student elective to a specialist primary care adolescent clinic in Montreal, Canada.
