The Epidemiology of STIs in the UK
Session overview
Description
This session covers the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United Kingdom.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the trends in gonorrhoea and syphilis in the UK
  • Describe the epidemiology of STIs in England by age, sex, ethnicity and sexual orientation
  • Identify and explain reasons for the differences in the epidemiology of STIs in England
  • Describe gaps in our current knowledge of STIs and how they influence interpretation of surveillance data

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:

  • Be familiar with the basic biological characteristics of the sexually transmitted infections found in the UK
  • Complete session HIV-STI 16 - Public Health/Transmission of STIs and HIV (260-0177)

This session will explain the reasons for fluctuations in trends in sexually transmitted infection (STI) since the early 20th century in terms of major demographic and social shifts, and historical events.

It will also explore the recent epidemiology of STIs (excluding HIV). There is considerable variation in the epidemiology of different STIs. This will be explained in terms of concepts including duration of infectivity and transmission probability (introduced in Module 16/Transmission of STIs and HIV).

You will also consider the gaps in our current knowledge of STI epidemiology and how they influence interpretation of surveillance data.
