Gonorrhoea is an important bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) with a relatively short incubation period.

In the UK, it disproportionally affects men who have sex with men (MSM) and people of black ethnicity, and is associated with living in areas of social deprivation.

Gonorrhoea is curable with antibiotics but can evolve rapidly to develop resistance. Ongoing surveillance is necessary to monitor changes in antimicrobial sensitivity.

Co-infections with other STIs are common. For example, approximately a third of patients with gonorrhoea are also infected with chlamydia.
