Chaperones and consent
Session overview
Description
This session explores the issues around the need for a chaperone and consent to examination.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • identify situations where chaperone issues are relevant
  • state the relevant issues around consent to examination and tests
  • apply statutory guidelines on the topic

This session covers principles of chaperoning and consent as relevant to patient examinations in sexual health clinics.

These principles will be covered by firstly looking at what is an intimate examination and the need for chaperones. It will examine who can be a chaperone and the role of a chaperone.

The session will then go on to describe how to prepare for an intimate examination and the consent issues that arise. Finally, the session touches on what happens after an examination takes place.
