This session provides an overview of common serious pathologies, that could masquerade as musculoskeletal conditions. It includes inflammatory joint conditions, including axial and peripheral arthropathies and It describes the possible signs and symptoms to look out for. It describes when it is necessary to refer on and highlights the speed of onward referral depending on the presentation.

By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • Describe which serious pathologies are likely to affect the spine and peripheral joints
  • Describe how to recognise axial and peripheral inflammatory joint symptoms
  • Describe the management of serious pathologies and inflammatory arthropathies
  • Justify why you might investigate patients to rule out these pathologies
  • Identify timely pathways and appropriate to follow based on index of suspicion
  • Evaluate early warning signs for serious pathology
  • Describe associated conditions which increase the likelihood of pathologies

Laura Finucane,
Consultant Physiotherapist

Laura is a consultant physiotherapist specialising in spinal conditions. Laura’s special interest is in serious pathologies of the spine and she has presented nationally and internationally on this subject. She has written a number of papers related to serious pathology and teaches at a postgraduate level. She is leading on an international study looking to developing a clinical reasoning framework for serious pathology. She is a past Vice-chair of the MACP and the current Vice President of The International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT).

Chris Mercer,
Consultant Physiotherapist

Chris is a past Chair of the MACP and has worked on numerous national guideline development committees relating to spinal pain. He is currently Chair of the Education Awards Panel and the CSP and a Trustee of the CSP Charitable Trust. He has an ongoing interest in serious pathology of the spine and is currently part of an international group working to develop a clinical reasoning framework in the area.

Susan Greenhalgh,
Consultant Physiotherapist

Sue is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and has been a consultant physiotherapist for 16 years gaining her PhD by Professional Practice in 2012. Sue has had a special interest in complex spinal patients for many years. She has researched many aspects of serious pathology of the spine particularly relating to identifying serious conditions early and this work is on-going. As a consequence of her work Sue presents nationally and internationally and has a number of publications including two books which have been identified as influencing practice worldwide. A second edition will be available in the autumn of 2019.

Jack March,
Rheumatology Clinical Lead

Qualifying as a physio in 2008 from the University of Plymouth Jack completed all the NHS rotations before taking up a post as a Senior Rheumatology Physio at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn. The 5.5 years in the post afforded him the time to specialise in the recognition and management of most rheumatological conditions. Currently he is the Rheumatology Clinical Lead for Chews Health and an ALP for Nuffield Health. Jack also provides CPD courses ranging from 2 hour seminars to full day courses on the recognition and management of rheumatology conditions in MSK settings.
