This session defines self-harm, considers some of the myths surrounding people who self-harm and discusses how to respond when someone presents with self-harm, including treatment options.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by self-harm and the main theories of why people self-harm
  • Identify the myths about self-harm, including issues such as suicidality and personality disorder
  • Demonstrate an ability to respond effectively to self-harm
  • Describe your role in managing self-harm within the consultation
