This course is split into seven sessions:

  • Session 1 - Adolescence is the stage at which many mental health problems begin to develop. This session describes some of the basic concepts of emotional well-being in young people and the epidemiology of some common mental health problems at this age. It also describes the organisation of adolescent mental health services in England and Wales and their relationship to primary care and paediatric services. Some related problems, such as self harm and substance misuse, are dealt with in other modules.
  • Session 2 provides an introduction to self-harm. The session starts with a knowledge-check, followed by information used within the health care setting to gain a better understanding of self-harm among young people.
  • Session 3 provides an overview of the assessment and management of self-harm in respect of young people who present to the service. It provides guidance on the role of primary care, emergency departments and hospital services. It is based on current guidelines and best practices and informed by a number of key publications by Royal Colleges and NICE.
    • This session follows on from Session AH_10_002 Introduction to Self-Harm, which helps to align attitudes and beliefs for healthcare professionals.
  • Session 4 describes some of the important stages of assessing a young person presenting with emotional or psychological problems. It also identifies strategies for distinguishing transient minor psychological problems from more serious ones.
  • Session 5 describes the features of some of the most common, and some of the most serious of mental health disorders in adolescence and the characteristics that may help distinguish them from each other. It also describes some of the important stages of assessing a young person presenting with mental health problems, particularly when these seem more complex.
  • Session 6 describes some of the broad issues to consider when managing common or potentially serious mental health

eIntegrity programmes are developed by NHS Health Education England’s e-Learning for Healthcare programme (HEE e-LfH).

The programmes are high quality self-directed learning programmes.  They are designed to support training and CPD and are excellent resources alongside other traditional teaching methodologies.  They have been developed by the UK NHS for use in the NHS.  However, many of the programmes have international relevance, particularly the specialty training programmes which are often mapped to UK specialty training curricula.
