This session summarises all aspects of subdermal implants.

For consistency we have adopted the FSRH Clinical Effectiveness Units guidance. This may differ from the manufacturer's summary of product characteristics and patient information leaflet.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the composition, pharmacokinetics and duration of use of subdermal implants
  • Explain the mechanism of action and efficacy of subdermal implants
  • List the advantages, disadvantages, contraindications and side effects of subdermal implants
  • Identify appropriate timing of insertion and removal

The subdermal implant (SDI) is a highly effective, long acting and reversible method of contraception which is inserted into a woman’s (usually non-dominant) upper arm.
