This session introduces the requirements for the safe insertion and removal of subdermal implants (SDIs), shows how an implant is inserted and removed, and demonstrates the techniques step by step.

For consistency we have adopted the FSRH Clinical Effectiveness Unit's (CEU) guidance. This guidance may differ from the manufacturer's summary of product characteristics and patient information leaflet.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the SDI insertion and removal site and the required equipment for the procedure (including emergency equipment)
  • Describe the principles, techniques and potential problems of SDI insertion, removal and re-insertion
  • Document the procedure and audit practice

The technique for implant insertion and removal is easy to learn and quick to undertake in a busy clinic or surgery.
