Responsibilities to Colleagues course for GPs
This session examines the role of those who have responsibilities for managing other people at work. This important area of leadership includes organising and allocating work to colleagues, showing consideration for their welfare and promoting equality and diversity. This session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the components of the effective management of people
- Discuss the principles of delegation and examine the benefits of good delegation
- Examine the leadership responsibilities and mechanisms for supporting and developing others
- Examine opportunities and responsibilities for promoting equality and diversity
- Demonstrate your contribution to leadership in a clinical setting by identifying ways to support effective team working
Clinicians inevitably have a contribution to make to the provision of a service to the patients by delegating and coordinating the work of others.
Before commencing this session you should complete these sessions in the Introductory Module:

- Introduction to Medical/Clinical Leadership Competency Framework
Patricia Gray is an independent HR and management consultant, facilitator and performance coach in General Practice. She was the managing partner of a large GP surgery for over ten years.
Bob has developed his interest in clinical leadership through his experiences training and working as a paediatrician and medical educationalist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and in other roles across London. He has developed a number of work-based leadership development initiatives, including ‘Paired Learning’, and was involved in supporting the NHS Institute’s Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project team in their work around the Medical Leadership Competency Framework.
