The Effects of Radiation on Children and Dose Reduction
Session Overview
Description
This session provides a basic understanding of radiation risks and the various mechanisms that enable us to reduce radiation exposure to children.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the radiation risks to the fetus and child
  • Explain how to limit the radiation dose received by children during radiological investigations

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:

  • Have a basic understanding of radiation terminology, the effects of radiation including deterministic (non-stochastic) as well as stochastic (chance), and the principles of dose reduction
  • Remember that deterministic effects in children are extremely rare; our attention is focused on stochastic effects, principally the chance of developing cancer
  • Complete the following sessions in Module 8a Physics:
  • Biological Effects of Radiation Exposure on the Embryo, Fetus and Infant (300-0678)
  • Fundamentals of Dosimetry (300-0680)
