Public Health course
This session develops an understanding of the role and value of public health practice within primary care, which considers the holistic needs of patients, individuals, communities and populations.
By the end of the session you should be able to:
- Discuss and contextualise the components of a public health approach to healthcare and the responsibility of healthcare professionals to consider the broader context of health and well-being in their work with individuals and communities
- Utilise health data to discuss and explore the wider determinants of health and lifestyle behaviours and how these impact on health physiologically, pathologically and psychosocially within a defined population
- Discuss and implement effective communication strategies including motivational interviewing and shared decision-making, to support individuals to improve their own health and well-being
- Discuss and implement key national policy and initiatives that support prevention and health promotion within primary care
- Enable social prescribing in supporting individuals and communities to build resilience and supported self-care skills to improve health and well-being outcomes
- Identify and implement ways to measure your impact as a public health practitioner
Gillian is a principal lecturer and academic lead for the Rehabilitation Sciences Team within the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, University of Central Lancashire. She has designed and delivered numerous undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including the first commissioned postgraduate module to support AHPs in first contact practice, primary care roles.
Gillian is an advanced physiotherapy practitioner at Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2017 she led and delivered an innovative project to develop the first physiotherapy-led service to deliver NHS Health Checks and the National Diabetes Prevention Programme, Gillian is also a National Fellow at Health Education England (HEE) where she leads the national pathway for development and transformation of musculoskeletal (MSK) advanced clinical practice (ACP), part of the wider national work on multi-professional advanced clinical practice.
Linda is the Deputy Chief Allied Health Professional Officer; she works for Public Health England as Lead AHP and Public Health Engagement Lead for the Emergency Services. She is responsible for championing and supporting the contribution of the 14 Allied Health Professions, Fire, Ambulance and Police services to improving the public’s health across England, as well as supporting the national health and wellbeing programmes co-ordinated by Public Health England.
Linda is a co-founder of AHPs4PH, a social media community of practice for AHPs with an interest in public health, and a trustee for the charity Sport Inspired. Linda has previously worked as a consultant dietician as well as in commissioning and service management. She has experience of working in and with Local Authority, NHS, private sector, research and education organisations.
