Principles of Minor Oral Surgery for Dental Practice
The aim of this session is to review the principles which are important in the delivery of safe and effective oral surgery. The importance of preoperative assessment, surgical planning and appropriate postoperative care will also be discussed.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing oral surgery
- explain the importance of planning surgical treatment to minimise the risk of the occurrence of complications following oral surgery
The extraction of teeth is a procedure commonly undertaken in both primary and secondary care settings.
After careful evaluation of the patient and through planning, extractions can be carried out in an effective and controlled manner.
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- medical conditions in relation to oral surgical treatment
- oral anatomy
- radiographic interpretation in relation to oral surgery
Jashme qualified from King’s College London in 2007. She gained experience in oral surgery and maxillofacial surgery working at Guy’s hospital, University College Hospital and Eastman dental hospital.
Currently, she is a speciality registrar working at Guy’s and King’s College hospitals working towards a CCST in oral surgery.
Aneesha qualified from the University of Bristol in 2006 and began her career gaining experience in oral surgery, oral medicine and restorative dentistry at the Great Western Hospital and Guy’s Hospital. She went on to complete her specialist training between Guy’s and King’s College hospitals and was awarded the CCST in Oral Surgery in 2012 and subsequent entry onto the GDC’s specialist list.
She is currently a consultant in Oral Surgery at King’s College Hospital where she is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Cathy studied at Sheffield University, then qualified from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1991. She obtained her FDS RCS(Eng) in 1994 and then went on to complete an Msc in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1996.
She was appointed as a Consultant Oral Surgeon at King’s College Dental Hospital in 2008 and became Clinical Lead of the department a year later. She now manages a team of 30 oral surgeons and is involved in the delivery of a specialist service, undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training.
She has a particular interest in paediatric oral surgery.
