This session will discuss how to appropriately manage both adult and paediatric dental trauma.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • select the logical approach to the assessment of patients with dental trauma
  • list the appropriate clinical and radiological investigations
  • assess cases correctly with the appropriate treatment
  • identify cases that will need to be referred urgently to hospital maxillofacial surgeons

Patients who have sustained dental trauma may present with other associated facial and bodily injuries. Most cases will be relatively straightforward localised tooth avulsions, luxations and crown or root fractures. Often, there is also an element of soft tissue injury.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • fundamentals of dental anatomy - crown and root morphology
  • eruption dates and basic embryology
