This session describes the purpose of assessment and discusses methods of assessment. It outlines different aspects of professional capabilites and how learning and assessment are linked. It emphasises the difference between formative Supervised Learning Events and summative, sign-off assessments.

  • Describe how confidence in assessment methods is developed
  • Describe how professional capabilities are developed and improved by Supervised Learning Events during a placement
  • Describe how outcomes from the curriculum are assessed at the end of each placement

Assessment is the determination of the value, significance or extent of something.

Christina Faull Professor,
Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Christina is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine and research lead at LOROS, Hospice care for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and University Hospitals of Leicester. She is Honorary Professor at University of Leicester. Christina was Clinical Lead for the e-ELCA programme between 2014 and 2017.

Christina trained at Newcastle Medical School. Having gained MRCP and an MD in psycho-neuro-endocrinology, she then specialised in palliative medicine and has been a consultant since 1994. She has been an Associate Postgraduate Dean and gained a particular interest in assessment. She has published two books on palliative care both of which were awarded the BMA book of the year.  Her research  includes end of life care of patients using respiratory support, meeting the needs of people from diverse ethnic communities and the support of family carers.
