Prescribing in Pregnancy course for GPs
This session highlights the issues a GP must consider when prescribing to a pregnant woman. It outlines the general principles of safe prescribing.
This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in July 2020.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Give appropriate advice to a pregnant woman presenting with common symptoms of pregnancy
- Recognise the principles of prescribing in pregnancy
Very few trials have rigorously proven the safety of medications for use by pregnant women. However, most women experience symptoms (or feel unwell) during pregnancy. Many more have ongoing health needs that require medications to be continued despite theoretical risk.
Melissa Sayer is a General Practitioner in Hackney, East London. She is a GP Trainer, undergraduate student tutor and assessor for the RCGP.
