This session will help learners to understand the definition and significance of a premature menopause and the key management issues involved in the healthcare of women experiencing it.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define normal, early and premature menopause
  • Recognise the possible presentations of premature ovarian failure and understand the possible causes
  • List the possible therapeutic options
  • Describe the multidisciplinary team necessary for ideal patient management
  • List the long-term problems associated with a premature menopause and the need for follow-up

The normal range for age at menopause (last menstrual period), due to ovarian failure, is between the ages of 45 and 55 years.

Nick Panay,
Consultant Gynaecologist

Nick Panay is a Consultant Gynaecologist with a special interest in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, Menopause and Menstrual Disorders.

He is a Consultant Gynaecologist, Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine & Surgery Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital London, also Honorary Senior Lecturer, Imperial College London.

He has a particular interest in minimal access surgery, both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic. He heads the operative outpatient hysteroscopy centre at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital which facilities the one stop investigation and treatment of women with bleeding disorders.

Julie Ayres,
Hospital Practitioner

Following vocational training Dr Ayres has been working in Menopause and PMS clinics as a clinical assistant/hospital practitioner since 1993. She is now on the Medical Advisory Council of the British Menopause Society where she is a member of the education sub-committee. In addition she runs the Yorkshire Menopause Group for healthcare professionals.
